FAQ

How to choose a reel for a left-handed or right-handed angler?

Our reels can be fished either left- or right-handed.  The only difference is the position of the check-lever.  Please follow this guide when ordering.

What’s the difference between bushing and ball bearing?

Both bushing and ball bearings will perform flawlessly under most conditions.  The bushing will last a lifetime if kept lubricated; whereas, the ball bearing needs no maintenance but has a limited life span.  Learn more about the difference between bushing and ball bearing options by watching this instructional video.

So, how does the three-way check-lever work?

Using John Milner’s right hand pin reel as an example, the check-lever is pointing to the butt of the fishing rod when reeled with the right hand; when the check-lever is in the down position, the drum is in free spool.

In the middle position, the check-lever engages the ratchet drag mechanism and stays there until you position the lever otherwise. When the check-lever is held and maintained in the up position, the drum will free spool until you release the lever and the internal spring returns the check-lever to the center position to re-engage the ratchet for drag. John Milner’s check-lever is very clever, has been called “bomb-proof” and, furthermore, you’ll never have to use a hair scrunchy when transporting a John Milner fishing reel!
