Care & Maintenance

Periodic maintenance of your John Milner Reel will ensure its silky smooth operation and provide you with years of satisfying performance on the rivers.

Keep your John Milner fishing reel clean, as fine particles of grit and silt can act like sandpaper on the contact surfaces. If you suspect grit, separate the drum from the frame and give them a good rinse, then lubricate sparingly.

A good mineral grease should be applied on the contact surfaces between the check-lever and ratchet plate, between spring and pawl, and where the pawl pivots. The centerpin, or spindle, of the bushing reel requires a small drop or two of light mineral oil (e.g. sewing machine or gun oil) every three or four fishing trips. The ball bearings are factory lubricated and should require no periodic maintenance until replacement is necessary.
